The choice of a yacht for your cruise is very important to the success of your holiday. At Variety Yachting we have been chartering large yachts of all types for years and therefore have a great deal of experience to help you make the right decision.
We will also advise on the right crew to complement the style of charter you may prefer. It is the combination of the right yacht and the right crew that will guarantee a charter to remember.
You may find it helpful to have a few guidelines on the different types of yachts available:
Fast, Planing Motor Yachts
Many yachts of this type are capable of continuous speeds in excess of 20 knots. This has the benefit of getting you from port to port as fast as possible. Imagine a late breakfast in Monaco, lunch in St. Tropez and dinner in northern Corsica. It's all about the destination... and getting there in style.
Displacement Motor Yachts
If you are not in a hurry just sit back and watch the world go slowly by. Enjoy a larger cabin, more space on deck and a more comfortable cruise, whatever the conditions. When in port, looking down on one's neighbor from the top deck is always nice too!
Sailing Yachts
Clear decks and luxurious interiors mean that large sailing yachts are no longer associated with hardy sailors and bunk beds! Often exhilarating, but ultimately relaxing, sailing off into the sunset is surely the ultimate dream. |
Charter rates are quoted per week for the hire of the yacht. Seven days is generally the minimum charter period accepted, but charters can be for any duration over or under seven days.
During low season periods we may consider charters of less than seven days. Charters commence from noon onwards on the first day and terminate by noon on the last day. For example, a charter contracted to commence at noon on 1st June and terminate at noon on 8th June constitutes a one week charter.
·High season rates apply from 1st June till 15th September
·Mid Season rates apply from 1st April till 31st May & 16th September till 31st October
·Low Season 1st November till 31st March |
As per the Greek tax legislation, Value Added Tax of 4.5% applies on the gross charter fee. |
Most charter rates in Greece are based on HYBA Terms, which imply that the yacht will be provided to the charterer in full commission and with all necessary equipment, properly insured for marine risks and managed by a crew, whose wages, food and clothing, lubricants for the Engine, port fees with Greek ports of call, water for the yacht & bottled water for crew & passengers are for the owner’s account. |
All operating expenses are payable by the charterer and comprise (but are not restricted to) the following items: fuel for the yachts main engines & generators, fuel for her tenders and water toys; local taxes; port, harbor and marina dues outside Greek ports of call, Corinth Canal crossing; customs clearance; electricity; personal laundry; all provisions, wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks and consumables for the charterer’s party; telecommunication costs.

The Hellenic Yacht Brokers Association (H.Y.B.A.) was founded in 1962 and is the oldest association of its kind in the world. The main goals of the H.Y.B.A. are the promotion of yachting in the Eastern Mediterranean, whilst maintaining the highest standards in the industry. In this capacity, the association forms that part of the National Tourist Organization of Greece which concerns yachting matters.
Most prominent yacht brokers in Greece are members of H.Y.B.A., thus making available to their clients the widest possible range of yachts, from the most traditional to the newest and ultra modern.
All contracts used by H.Y.B.A. members are approved by the National Tourist Organization of Greece.
Chartering a yacht from a H.Y.B.A. member gives you the following reassurance of quality:
1. All members are Greek Government licensed and bonded for their clients’ protection.
2. Our members are experienced in selecting the most suitable yacht to meet your requirements and will assist you in preparing your itinerary.
3. All yachts are carefully inspected and licensed by a specialized Government Authorized Committee to maintain the highest standards of safety and comfort. |
One of the true delights of chartering a yacht is your complete freedom to create your own itinerary.
It is impossible for us to cover in detail all the truly magnificent locations that our yachts can visit throughout the charter days.
The program can be of course changed by you on the spot in agreement with the captain.
Some issues regarding the itinerary are that the yachts does not travel during night and that daily sailing has to 4 hours a day unless otherwise agreed. The captain can at his discretion also add 2 hours sailing on some dates. |
Our First Priority is Safety
A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE ARE WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The Yachts according to weather regulations are Not allowed to sail at the following weather conditions.
Amphitrite KY: 5 to 6 Beaufort Locally
Obsession: 6 to 7 Beaufort Locally
Monte Carlo: 6 to 7 Beaufort Locally
Monaco: 7 Beaufort Locally
In such cases the yacht must stay at the port until the weather gets better.
Together with the Captain the Itinerary can be altered in order to avoid rough weather and being blocked in one port of call. |
Berthing arrangements during peak periods, especially in the most popular marinas in the Mediterranean, can be very difficult. We will, in collaboration with the yacht's captain, try our best to organize your requested berths if you let us know in advance. Nothing is guaranteed and some marinas only confirm bookings a few hours before arrival. |
If your chosen cruising itinerary necessitates embarking or disembarking from a point other than the yacht’s home port, positioning charges (delivery/redelivery fees) may be required. These charges vary from the distance that the yacht has to cover in order to reach the specified port. |
your chosen yacht has been verified, you will receive a standard HYBA Charter Agreement for signature. If positioning charges are required. These charges, if applicable, will be confirmed in advance and affirmed in the Charter Agreement. |
·A deposit of 50% of the total charter fee is payable by bank transfer on signature of the Charter Agreement. This confirms your booking.
·The remaining 50%, is payable by bank transfer 15 days before the charter commences.
·Advance Provisioning Allowance, together with any taxes Delivery / Redelivery fees, extras and any additionally agreed charges must be paid by you prior to arrival.
|
The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due prior to clients arrival or upon arrival. This Sum is usually approximately 20% of the charter fee.
Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter such as, fuel, food, drinks, port fees(if needed), these funds will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. He will ensure that your yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. Whilst an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end for the cruise.
If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, the captain will inform the client and the client can choose either to pay each expense on the spot or pay the whole amount at the end of the cruise.
All outstanding bills should be settled in cash before final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. |
Every detail counts. Several weeks before you board your yacht, we will ask you to complete a detailed questionnaire describing the preferences and special needs of all the members of your party, such as dietary or medial requirements, details of any allergies, and your sporting or entertainment requests. This will enable us and the crew of your chosen yacht to ensure that everything possible is done to make your charter a fabulous experience. |
You just have to fill in our CHARTERER'S PREFERENCE FORM. To prepare your cruise carefully, according to your own individual requirements, we will forward to you a detailed questionnaire which will need to be completed by you with your travel details (we will organize adequate pick-up from the airport and transfer to your yacht), your guests list, your food likes and dislikes (we will make sure that your Chef has adequately stocked his galley and has prepared menus to your taste), your wine list (we will ensure your orders are in place and that your favorite drinks are waiting for you onboard), etc ....
You are now on board... We will always try to welcome you onboard or to meet you on the last day of your cruise, but this may not always be possible due to location, in which case we will call you during the cruise to ensure all is to your satisfaction. We will also remain in discreet contact with the vessel during your stay on board, so if you have any concern, please do not to hesitate to contact us directly or via the Captain.
Please note that the charter rates, status and equipment lists given for each yacht are correct at the time of going to press. However, there are occasional changes, so please check before booking. |
Our yachts are very welcoming to children. However we would recommend a nanny to be on board during the charter. The crew cannot provide child care or babysitting services except if it has been discussed and confirmed during discussions prior to your arrival. |
Smoking is only possible on outdoor areas including all decks.
Smoking indoor constitutes a safety hazard. |
Crew gratuities are discretionary, although it is customary for a charterer who has enjoyed the kind and attentive service of an obliging crew to extend a gratuity. Crew gratuities are normally in the region of 10% of the charter fee, but can be adjusted up or down according to your level of satisfaction.
The distribution of the Gratuities must be entrusted to the captain. In this way, inconspicuous crew members such as engineers and culinary staff, who make an important contribution to your safety and enjoyment, will not be overlooked. |
The charter rate includes Insurance for Hull & Machinery and big amounts for 3rd Party Liabilities. However we strongly recommend that charterers take out Cancellation and Curtailment Insurance to protect their investment if unforeseen circumstances prevent or curtail their charter. Additionally, all members of the charter party should be covered by Personal Accident and Medical Insurance, and their personal effects should be insured against theft, loss or damage.
Other forms of insurance, such as Charterer’s Liability may also be prudent.
We will be pleased to assist with arranging any policy not covered by the basic Charter Agreement. |
A Certificate of Competency is required to participate in water sports activities (jet skis, wave runners and other mechanically propelled watercraft). Please consider which members of your party will want to use the yacht’s motorized water toys. If they do not have the required licenses /certificates they will not be able to use them by themselves Use of personal watercraft is only permitted subject to the operator having the appropriate license and meeting with local operating regulations. Any liability arising from non-compliance is entirely at the operator’s risk. |
Luggage: We request that you limit the number of roller bags. Depending on the size of the yacht you are chartering, carry-ons and duffel bags are preferred as they are much easier to stow.
Clothing: Chances are you will need less clothing than you think. You may spend considerable time in swimsuits (bring several), shorts and casual resort clothing. Be sure to bring a loose fitting cover-up. Bring a T-shirt to wear while snorkeling to prevent sun burn. A light jacket or sweater may come in handy on deck in the evening or while in air conditioning. Ladies may want to bring casual cotton dresses or resort attire for dinner. Men may find casual slacks appropriate for dining ashore. If you are chartering in the Caribbean, coat and tie are generally not required in the restaurants and resorts, although the more upscale spots ask that men wear long pants and a collared shirt.
Motion sickness: Acupressure or electric impulse wrist bands reportedly work very well for many people, with no side effects. Available at your local yacht chandlery or online at West Marine. ( www.westmarine.com / search on seasickness). Ground ginger capsules (available at Health Food Stores) and Tryptone (available at dive shops) are also reported to be effective.
Medications: Bring adequate supplies of prescription or other medication.
Shoes: We go barefoot aboard the yacht; boat shoes, slip-on sneakers, or thong sandals work well for going ashore.
Electronic appliances: If you wish to bring electronic appliances, we suggest that you inform your Merrill-Stevens charter broker in advance, so that they can check with the crew about compatibility with the yacht's electrical system.
Camera: Don’t forget a camera! If you shoot with a digital camera, we are able to check with the crew of a particular vessel to determine if their onboard computer system supports your memory card format.
